What the Research Says: Cognition and Learning

How does the brain integrate knowledge, and what implications does this have for how we teach?  These questions guide the CTL's Quarterly Review of Research presentation.  Kay Sagmiller, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, provided instructors a lively summary of recent brain research and explored the pedagogical implications of these findings. Working together in groups, and building on other groups' contributions, several key takeaways were established: Mistakes can be the teachable moments; It's important to establish where students are in the curriculum, rather than where they should be; Teaching students to embrace ambiguity and the value of the struggle for understanding can be an important life skill that they then apply to their educational practice.
