Many of the top majors that Alaskan undergraduate students pursue at OSU revolve around the environment. Marine biology is popular not only because OSU has one of the best programs in the United States, but also because of the facilities available to students for study and research, such as our two research vessels and the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
Closely related is the biology program which provides pathways to numerous areas of study including fisheries and wildlife, conservation biology (OSU ranked #1 in the U.S.), and the health sciences, med school, etc.
Environmental engineering continues this theme for Alaska students at OSU, and many students enter our General Engineering program before branching out into a specific discipline.
Finally, OSU’s Forestry programs are very popular amongst the Alaska population. OSU boasts it’s own research forests, links to industry, and a survey of 53 university forestry programs in the United States and Canada published in 2006 in the Journal of Forestry ranked the College of Forestry at OSU as the top forestry program in North America.
Rounding out the top majors for Alaska students is Athletic training which is one of the most popular majors of all OSU students. The athletic training program is highly competitive, and students are provided a path to National Athletic Trainers Association certification before they graduate, thus giving OSU graduates an advantage when entering the field. In fact, an athletic training alumnae, Ariko Iso became the first female athletic trainer in the NFL. She is the head trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
