Credit Opportunities

Earning advanced standing Credit

Advanced standing reports indicating how previously earned credits will transfer to OSU are prepared for fall term applicants who pay the advance tuition deposit (ATD) and register for an orientation session (START). During other terms, advanced standing credit is applied to a student's record after the student has been admitted to the university and official transcripts or score reports have been received by the Office of Admissions. Please allow 2-4 weeks for credit to be evaluated and appear as part of your student record. For information on credit by examinations or subjects not listed in this brochure, please contact the Office of Admissions or the appropriate academic department after you have enrolled.

College-Level Examination Program

CLEP is a nationwide program that allows students to earn college credit by examination.

CLEP general examinations in the humanities, sciences and social sciences may be taken by students who have not completed their sophomore year in college. A score of 50 or better on each general examination generates nine ungraded "pass" quarter credits. OSU does not grant any credit for the English general exam.

CLEP examinations cover material taught in courses that most students take as requirements in the first two years of college. The amount of credit usually equals the amount of credit earned by someone successfully completing the course.

International Baccalaureate

Oregon State recognizes IB achievement by awarding credit to students who score 5 or above on higher level IB exams. OSU also grants additional benefits for students who complete the full IB diploma with a score of 30 or higher, as follows:

Guaranteed admission to OSU. (Though not a consideration for admission, students are required to submit SAT scores for course placement purposes.)

Sophomore Standing, and IB Scholarships are available. Students with a total score on IB exams of 30 or higher may choose to accept the annual, renewable scholarship award of at least $2000 OR may compete for more substantial awards.

Students must indicate that they would like official test scores sent to OSU. OSU will grant credit only for "higher" level subjects (not standard), unless an exception is noted below. For scores of 5, 6 and 7 OSU will award one year of credit in that subject. The official International Baccalaureate Certificate is required in order to award credit.

Contact your IB Coordinator or IB North America to request score reports.

Military Experience Credit

Oregon State University grants up to 45 credit hours for military education as recommended by the American Council on Education's (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. This is in accordance with transfer credit policies at Oregon State University and the Oregon University System. Students may request evaluation of military credit by furnishing the Office of Admissions with an AARTS or SMART transcript. Transcripts may be obtained through their homepage at: ARMY (AARTS), or NAVY (SMART). Transcripts from the US Coast Guard Institute are also available for order. Additional informational links to other service pages can be found on the ACE website. Choose "programs and services" from the top menu and then "military programs".

Oregon State University will assess and award block transfer credit upon review of your military record. An evaluation report showing block transfer credit hours will be sent to you. Your major college will receive a copy of your evaluation report and the ACE recommendation guideline.
