Weekly activities and Assignments:

Assignment sheet: Every Tuesday, you will hand in a yellow assignment sheet. This should include:

In the third column, you can write down specific questions you may have (or you can request an appointment for individual help).

Vocabulary: On Tuesdays, you will also hand in a list of at least 10 interesting and useful words or idioms from in-class work, homework assignments, or practice tests.

a) Write the sentence(s) in which you heard/found this word.

b) Highlight the word.

c) Beneath the sentence:

  1. Guess the definition of the word (using any context clues available).
  2. Give a dictionary definition of the word (as it is used in the context of the sentence).


Examples:

a) Idiom from a listening test:

He kept teasing me, so I finally told him to cut it out.

  1. Guess: go away.
  2. Dictionary definition: stop it.

b) Word from a reading passage:

Staggering tasks confronted the people of the United States when the Civil War ended.

  1. Guess: big, great

    (You might need to read several sentences, a paragraph, or even the entire passage to determine meaning from context.)

  2. Dictionary definition: overwhelming
