Joyce Holroyd - Student Affairs Service Award 2002-03

Statement of Wonderfulness

In Celebration of

Joyce Holroyd

A quote from a colleague reads like this:  “I absolutely, and with all my heart, believe that Joyce Holroyd is due this honor, and should she win, I will be the first to stand up and give her the ovation she deserves.”

Joyce is the general manager of McNary Central and is responsible for its day-to-day operations.  She spearheads the UHDS Serve Safe food-handling program for all Housing and Dining facilities and is a certified trainer for the same.  During the massive renovation last year she helped the McNary Central staff stay focused on excellent service and supported them with her good cheer!

Joyce is a member of the OSU Professional Faculty Leadership Association (PFLA).  She is also a member of the Dining Services leadership team and is active in the monthly leader/manager sessions, and because those she supervises are so dedicated, well trained, and competent in their positions, she has been able step outside the Center to contribute to the larger OSU community as a member of several search committees.

Joyce, in the midst of the gargantuan task of managing a dining center, you still find a way to stay student-centered.  In addition to your dedication to serve the very best meals possible, you work to foster a fun and stimulating environment for students. You are admired for your team building skills and for the smiles and kind words you have for the students and customers that come through McNary Central each day.

Your colleagues describe you as honorable, conscientious, dedicated, and as a person of great integrity.

You are characterized as fair, caring, and just.  One staff member noted that many have grown under your

leadership -- you have made a real difference in their lives!  You are not afraid to show your staff how you feel, and vocalize your appreciation for the gifts that each one brings to the workplace.  Your sense of generosity and genuine gratitude, have not gone unnoticed by those around you!

One employee put it like this:  “Joyce is the unsung hero of UHDS. She goes about the day-to-day stuff with such grace and class that many times you feel as if running a dining center is an effortless endeavor. She is totally a person to put the human being above all else. She has such a great heart that you cannot help but feel great after you meet or have a conversation with her.”  Other’s described Joyce as “one of the finest human beings I have ever worked with,” and as “… one of those employees and managers that one wishes they could clone.”  Still another said, “I support this nomination because Joyce deserves this recognition for the contribution and gifts that she brings to our department each and every day;” and “I think it time Joyce be recognized and thanked for these gifts of strength and faith that she demonstrates in her walk on this campus and earth.”

You are deeply respected by your staff for making the workplace safe for self-expression and the sharing of individual ideas.  You give weight to each suggestion and discuss it as though “it could be implemented today!”  You are revered for the importance you have placed upon the on-going education and development of both staff and students, and for the way in which you model a balanced work ethic focusing on pride and responsibility.

Congratulations, Joyce, and thanks for all you do to enrich our lives!
