Canola a possible growth market for Central Oregon
(The Oregonian)

An Oregon State University researcher has determined that a variety of canola for seed could be possibly grown in Central Oregon, opening the door for economic growth for the area. Brian Duggan, a crop physiologist for OSU Extension based in Madras, said the winter variety of canola seed that flowers in April will survive the winter and won't interfere with other crops in the area.

Most family business owners do not have succession plans
(Portland Business Journal)

Eagles, people now live beak-to-cheek
(The Oregonian)

Bald eagles, once hanging on by their talons in Oregon and removed from the endangered species list on Thursday, have rebounded fivefold since the early 1980s. Facing less persecution from humans during the past three or four decades, bald eagles have become more tolerant of humans, sometimes nesting close to highways and subdivisions, says Frank Isaacs, an eagle researcher at Oregon State University.

'A Woman Needs a Man Like a Fish'
(U.S. News and World Report)

A hammerhead shark born in captivity in Omaha in 2001 had only one parent, researchers announced after several tests confirmed that the infant shark had no traces of male DNA. This bizarre biological phenomenon, known as "parthenogenesis"—virgin birth—had previously been observed in insects, birds, and some smaller fish but never in so complex an organism. "If the biological is in danger of extinction, other mechanisms turn on," says Prof. Thomas Savage, a poultry scientist at Oregon State University who has studied parthenogenesis in turkeys. "It's much more common in birds."
