"Acting your age" used to make sense. Going to college, leaving home, getting married, having children and retiring took place at predictable stages. That was then. "Age has become much less significant in our society and in the minds of people," says Richard Settersten Jr., a professor at the Center for Healthy Aging Research at Oregon State University.
It's a version of Seaside -- carefully created at a fraction of its actual size -- just waiting to be slammed by a tsunami. Oregon State University's O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory's Tsunami Wave Basin is re-creating a few blocks of Seaside so researchers can repeatedly slam tidal waves into it. And officials of the Oregon coast town are thrilled. The $1 million study could help save lives.
“Love is a better teacher than duty,” said Albert Einstein. Elizabeth W. Sulzman, an award-winning associate professor at Oregon State University, was the embodiment of the love that teaches well, according to her students, colleagues and friends. “She had more energy than you can imagine,” said Barbara Bond, a friend and colleague. “She was gorgeous and vivacious.”
In our body-conscious society, virtually everyone seems to be obsessed with shedding excess pounds. But Oregon State University researchers are finding that self-consciousness about being overweight may actually keep some people from exercising, changing their diet or taking other steps to slim down to healthier levels. A new study titled “Weight Stigma and Perceived Physical Appearance: Their Key Precursors and Relationship to Physical Self-Worth and Health Behaviors” is attempting to measure people’s attitudes about being overweight and gauge those influence actions that might help them lose weight.

The deadline for Oregon Literary Fellowships is June 29. Oregon Literary Fellowships provide fiscal support to writers and independent publishers throughout the state of Oregon. The minimum amount for each fellowship has been raised to $2,500. Fellowships are awarded to writers in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and young readers literature.
