Bioactive glass may help prolong life of composite tooth fillings (News-Medical)

Engineers at Oregon State University have made some promising findings about the ability of “bioactive” glass to help reduce the ability of bacteria to attack composite tooth fillings – and perhaps even provide some of the minerals needed to replace those lost to tooth decay. OSU researchers’ find could slow age-related diseases (KTVZ)

Research at Oregon State University suggests it may be possible to slow age-related disease with new types of treatments, according to a report released Wednesday.

The battle upstream (Comstock’s Magazine)

Robert Lackey, a professor of fisheries and wildlife at Oregon State University, predicts wild salmon south of Canada will be essentially extinct by the year 2100. A few fish may remain, Lackey thinks, but they will be what he calls “boutique” runs — populations that number in the hundreds or less, are much too small to support a fishery, and draw crowds of tourists each time the fish arrive in freshwater to spawn.

Plutonium-238, nearly out of reach for 30 years, now in competition (Laboratory Equipment)

However, Oregon State University researchers say they have a better plan. In a simulated model presented to the Center for Space Nuclear Research in June, they said they have a helix-shaped system that, when inserted into a reactor, circulates spherical capsules of neptunium isotopes in the most efficient way around the reactor to create the plutonium.

Floral smells stop stinging bees (Inside Science)

Ramesh Sagili, a bee researcher at Oregon State University in Corvallis, said he is not surprised that attractive floral scents can affect stinging behavior. He said it makes sense that bees would weigh the costs and benefits of stinging before they act, and that the floral scents could confuse them by presenting conflicting information that leads them to think stinging is not the right response.

Walking a ‘silver bullet’ for so many woes (East Anglia News)

In addition, according to research by Oregon State University 30 minutes of brisk walking over five days could aid sleep and help people feel more alert during the day.

Puff adders appear ‘invisible’ to noses (Science News)

Robert Mason of Oregon State University in Corvallis notes that other snake species studied so far, even sea snakes, release pheromones to communicate with others of their species. Mason, a chemical ecologist studying snake-to-snake signals, wonders if puff adders ever turn smelly, at least to others of their kind, during breeding season.

“When [the autonomous underwater vehicle] Sentry came back on board and we looked at the photo survey our jaws just dropped,” said co-chief scientist Bill Chadwick (OSU). “There was this brand new lava flow on the sea floor, which looks like it could have come out yesterday…It’s in a fascinating part of the Back-arc with whopping hydrothermal signals.”
