Campus-Wide Impact of Title IX

Campus-Wide Impact of Title IX

Community

Initially, the Women Studies Program consisted of a small group of eager students taking courses from committed volunteer faculty. Over the past 40 years, Women Studies has grown exponentially to include six full-time faculty, nearly 30 instructors, and 50 program faculty. The program now offers an undergraduate certificate, minor, and major, a graduate minor, and a new master of arts. Plans are also underway to introduce a doctoral program in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

The Women’s Center began as a study group committed to creating a space on campus for the study and discussion of the role of sexism in the lives of students and employees. Over the past 40 years, the Women’s Center has continued to provide educational programming and has expanded to include efforts to foster leadership, connect peers through mentoring initiatives, feature research, and acknowledge significant achievements by women.

In addition to education and resources, efforts to address sex-based discrimination have also required advocacy. The President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCOSW) is an independent commission responsible to the President. Over the past 40 years, the PCOSW has addressed a range of issues from child care availability to the navigability of promotion and tenure. Most recently, the commission has focused on the impacts of bullying and the benefits of mentoring and sponsorship in advancement.

It is only fitting that a status report about the national and local impact of Title IX would also recognize and celebrate an extraordinary 40-year history of the Women Studies Program, the Women’s Center, the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, and all of the individuals whose commitment and dedication has made Oregon State a more equitable and inclusive university.
