b210 Data Center Maintenance (2014 Feb 11 5 pm to 6 pm)

We will be doing maintenance on network gear in the Kerr B210 data center; specifically to b210nxs6k2 E1/8. This should not cause any disruption to the network. It will happen between 5 pm and 6 pm.

After applying a fix recommended by Blackboard, Inc., the system’s performance has returned to normal. We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure this week’s system issues have been resolved.

There will be cable maintenance between 5 pm and 5:15 pm. This maintenance is to remove faulty cabling on network gear. There should be no disruption in service.

Blackboard responding normally

Blackboard returned to normal about 11:50am. We are researching the root cause and will take the necessary steps to prevent such lack of responsiveness in the future.

NERO maintenance, Jan 31st after 1700

NERO, one of OSU’s Internet Service Providers, received word that one of the backbone circuit providers to the Klamath Falls hub will perform emergency maintenance tonight to replace failing hardware.  

OSU customers should notice little to no impact on connections to and from the Internet.

We presently do not have an exact time as to when this work will occur, but expect it to occur after 17:00.  We will take steps in advance to route traffic off the impacted circuit to the alternate path so as to minimize any impact.  

Workflow Maintenance Friday 1/31/2014 9:30AM-10:30AM

The Workflow application will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance on Friday 1/31/2014 from 9:30AM-10:30AM.

We will be resetting expiring passwords and adjusting load balancer configuration.

MySQL Upgrade

We will be performing upgrades to our internal MySQL servers this weekend between 10-12pm. These house databases for Maintain, Greylisting, the Outages blog, and DMCA tracking. During our maintenance window there will be two brief outages for these services, lasting approximately 5 minutes each. During these brief interruptions, the aforementioned services will be unavailable. We will be taking steps to ensure mail flow continues normally during this maintenance.

Resolved: service interruptions to Blackboard, ONID login, etc., Mon 1/27

Information Services identified a hardware problem as the root cause of today’s network service interruptions. This issue was resolved by 1:00pm on Monday afternoon January 27th and, as the hardware has been isolated from the network, we do not expect further service interruptions due to this incident.

We will continue monitor the situation. Per standard procedure, we will review our troubleshooting and response procedures to minimize the impact of future, similar occurrences.

Planned Maintenance – CWS Drupal Update on Wed. Jan. 29

On Wednesday Jan. 29th CWS will be updating CWS Hosted Drupal sites to the latest versions of Drupal. This is for both Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 and includes an important security update for Drupal core and several modules. Although this will incur a 2 to 3 minute interruption in service to the affected websites, most site visitors will not notice the interruption, as most pages are cached. This will be a rolling upgrade and we cannot say exactly when or on which day a specific site will be affected.

Ongoing Service Interruptions, including Blackboard and ONID logins, Monday 1/27

We are continuing to see intermittent network issues throughout the morning of Monday, Jan. 27. The issues are affecting Blackboard, ONID login access, printing in the library, access to centrally hosted Windows services such as SharePoint, and Banner logins. Some services, such as Microsoft Exchange, appear to not have been affected.

We believe that the source of this service interruption comes from on campus traffic, although the exact nature of it is not understood at this time. We are moving forward with mitigation strategies to reduce impact, although this may invoke subsequent (if brief) service interruptions.

More updates will be sent as information becomes available.

Update on intermittent network outage 1/27/2014

We are continuing to see intermittent interruptions to several network services on campus.

Many OSU network services have been impacted including Blackboard.

Google Apps Service Interruptions, Friday 1/24

Google is reporting that Google Mail experienced a service interruption this morning, January 24, from 11:10am to 11:20am. They seem to have resolved this issue, which affected all Google users, and not just accounts for Google Apps for OSU.

Google is also reporting issues with access to other core apps as of 11:58am, although these issues seem to be variable and intermittent. Again, these issues are potentially affecting all Google users.

Exchange Services Outage

Colleagues,

There are confirmed reports of intermittent time out errors, when using Outlook Web App (exmail.oregonstate.edu/owa) starting on 1/21/14. We are aware of the issues, and have undertaken some steps to troubleshoot the issues at hand.

We will advise when the issue is fixed, and we apologize for the disruption in services.

Load Balancer maintenance Saturday January 25th 8am

Saturday January 25th at 8am I will roll services over to the secondary load balancer, which is running the latest software. Any persistent network connections through the load balancer will be dropped, but new connections can be established immediately.

The following services typically have persistent connections through the load balancer:

ONID LDAP – ldap.onid.orst.edu ONID IMAP – imap.onid.oregonstate.edu Banner INB – adminfo.ucsadm.oregonstate.edu

ONID IMAP and Banner INB users may notice a “blip” and need to reconnect.

The following websites are also serviced by the load balancer, but there are no persistent connections so we don’t expect any impact to users:

MyOSU – https://myosu.oregonstate.edu OSU Online Services – https://adminfo.ucsadm.oregonstate.edu OSCAR – https://oscar.oregonstate.edu Nolij – https://nolij.ucsadm.oregonstate.edu/NolijWeb/ MyONID – https://secure.onid.oregonstate.edu CAS/Shibboleth – https://login.oregonstate.edu ONID Webmail – https://webmail.oregonstate.edu

We will run on the secondary load balancer for a week to ensure there are no issues with the new software. If there are no issues, I will upgrade the software on the primary load balancer and roll services back to it. I’ll send another notice to Outages when that is scheduled.

Banner INB and ONID email maintenance at 10:00-10:05PM January 13 2014

There will be a 5-minute emergency service interruption tonight from 10:00-10:05 PM to reboot a hung load balancer. Existing connections to Banner INB and ONID email (for users not migrated to Google) will be dropped, and users can reconnect after the maintenance is complete.
