Students
Study Abroad
OSU offers many different study abroad programs. Students from a variety of majors, with many different interests, scatter to very distinct places across the world. From taking theater classes in London to studying Chinese in Beijing, OSU students gain tremendous skills and have life-changing experiences overseas. By studying abroad, you expose yourself to new people, new cultures, and new adventures while continuing your studies here at OSU.
International Internships
The IE3 Global Internship program is a supervised, practical, international work experience. Internships range from 10 weeks to six months for full-time work. You can earn academic credits at OSU for your internship experience, allowing you to gain valuable skills while working towards your degree. Internships are an increasingly important and integral component of a well-rounded education and an international internship is an excellent way to gain insight into a culture, an industry, and an organization.
International Degree
The International Degree is Oregon State University's original dual degree program, allowing you the opportunity to explore the international dimensions of your primary major. Participants earn two degrees: a bachelor's degree in any major from Anthropology to Zoology, plus a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies in that same field.
You may find that your needs are best met by individualized directed study. This can take the form of specific individualized study overseas or, more often, a research project. Directed study can be undertaken for 3 – 9 credits and in some cases with permission 12 credits. Please remember that you must take at least 6 credits per term to be considered for any financial aid.
Working with academic faculty is at the core of your academic planning. As soon as you have identified a potential topic, you should identify a faculty adviser willing to provide guidance to your project. This adviser is involved in the project from the beginning (including helping you refine your topic and methodology and locate relevant literature) to the end (including final grading of the project). Your chances of finding a willing faculty member is enhanced if you have put considerable thought into your project and have done relevant coursework in the faculty member's discipline. Petition Programs
For students who do not find a program currently on the OSU study abroad approved list suitable to their academic needs, they may petition for approval of a different program. The requirement for petitioning a program includes an “academic and/or geographic reason” why a student is choosing a program not on the approved list – NOT because it is cheaper; a friend is attending that program; it’s located in a better location or someone’s relative works there. The petition will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Study Abroad Advisory Council. Petition applicants must make an appointment with the Director of IDEA before a petition application may be initiated. Petition applications are due October 1 and February 1.
