Entomology has taken Amy Dreves around the world. She spent four years in the West Indies, two of them with the Peace Corps. She’s worked in Mali, Nepal, Alaska, South America, Morocco and other parts of Africa with government agencies and private companies. She holds a master’s and doctorate from Oregon State, where she now works for the university’s Extension Service.

Sushi Restaurant Closes After Serving Endangered Whale Meat

The New York Times has reported that the team of activists behind the “The Cove,” a film about dolphin hunting that won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Film earlier this month, coordinated with federal officials on the sting operation. The paper said that an associate producer on “The Cove” created a tiny camera that two activists wore into the restaurant, where they were served the whale meat. The activists sent samples to the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University, which confirmed that they were from an endangered Sei whale, the Times said.

Noted wheat breeder joins French co-op

Trendy restaurant apologizes for serving whale meat

Armed with a hidden camera, the two women captured the waitress serving them whale and horse meat and identifying them as such, a federal criminal complaint said. A receipt from the restaurant at the end of the meal identified their selection as “whale” and “horse” with the cost — $85 — written next to them. The women snuck pieces of the meat into a napkin and later sent them for examination to a researcher at Oregon State University. He identified the whale sample to be that of sei whale, prosecutors said.

OSU to build new international residence hall

On his deathbed, Doug Meuler wrote his last will and testament in big block letters on a simple sheet of white paper. He left everything he had to the Native American Longhouse and the Ethnic Studies Department at Oregon State University. (See also Gazette-Times)
