Abstract

This thesis is a comparison of the role and social position of women in Russian and Mexican societies and the influence that the government of these two countries, as well as religion and the church, have had on the lives of women.
The areas discussed are social conditions that pertain to women in both societies such as: dual-work burden, infidelity, alcoholism, declining birth rate, abortion, divorce, employment, machismo, domestic violence, and women in government.
Many of the social problems that are occurring in both of these countries are hitting women the hardest, and despite many of the surface differences that exist between the religious and political structures of Russia and Mexico, the role of women in both of the countries is very much the same. Until the governments of these two societies start addressing gender issues, women in Russia and Mexico will remain second class citizens.
