Course Overview
The primary objective of this ten week course was to provide twenty-one students with a critical overview of immigration to the United States from a socio-historic perspective. Immigration continues to be one of the most important issues in American society today altering racial dynamics, influencing families, putting pressure on education systems, and influencing culture. This advanced Sociology class examined the predominant theories of international immigration and studied the relationships between the historical and contemporary context. The course answered the questions: (a) why people leave their homelands, (b) where newcomers to the United States settle, (c) what jobs immigrants do, (d) how do second generation immigrant children fare in the United States, (e) what “race,” gender, and social class issues immigrants face in the United States and, (f) the degree of acculturation and segmented assimilation the second generation has occurred in the United States.
