Getting started

Software

link to previous page in the series link to next page in the series

All of the software essential to the course is available free.

Browsers

The course Web site should work with whichever browser you are using, as long as it is up to date.  I have checked the site directly with Netscape 8, Firefox 2, and IE 7, and indirectly with Opera and Safari.  As always, let me know if you encounter trouble.

Acrobat Reader

Some of the course documents are in PDF format, a format that allows you to print diagrams and forms accurately. You need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader (any version) or the equivalent to read and print these documents.

Video player

The How to Measure chapter has two videos in rm format. One program that handles this format is RealMedia, also available for free.

Word Processing and Spreadsheets

You will be submitting your reports and calculations as word processing files and spreadsheets. (See the section on Assignments for more information.) The acceptable formats are Microsoft Office, Word Perfect Office, and Open Office. The first two are not free, but if you do not already own them, Open Office is a free alternative.
