Oregon State University

These are the Service Desk Helpdocs! Here you will find a wide variety of technical documents to help you along your way while you are here at Oregon State University. You can get started by learning about ONID account, going to our FAQ, or simply telling us your role here at Oregon State University!

I am a:

new student

Prospective students are anyone who has applied to Oregon State University, but has not yet received an acceptance letter. Acceptance letters are either mail physically, emailed to your person email, or both. While you are considered a "Prospective Student", you have access to a very minimal amount of the tools and services that Oregon State University has to offer. Below are a couple of common questions that we receive from other prospective students.

What accounts do I have access to?

  • Banner Self-Service - This account is separate from your ONID account, which you do not have access to yet. Once you get an acceptance letter from Oregon State University, you will begin using your ONID account instead of this account. But for now, this is where all of your Financial Aid award information is located.

What mailboxes do I have access to?

  • None - For now, Oregon State University will use your personal email, that you have provided, in order to contact you. Once you have an ONID account, you will also obtain a Gmail account through Oregon State University.

What are a couple useful things to know?

  • How to Find Your OSU ID Number - Your OSU ID number is one that you will need for just about everything that is hosted through Oregon State University. It is a good idea to keep this number easily accessible, or even memorized.
  • How to Get to Financial Aid information - If you have received an email regarding your Financial Aid Award letter, you must log in with your Banner Self-Service account in order to accept or decline those awards.

What are the main tools I need to know?

  • Traditional Online Services - This is where you will be using your Banner Self-Service account information to sign in.
  • How to Create an ONID Account - This will be the next step immediately after receiving your acceptance letter if you wish to attend Oregon State University. Keep in mind, you will not be able to create your account until the award letter is received.

As a current student, almost everything you sign into will be with your ONID account. That account is how you will access the bulk of applications that Oregon State University has to offer. As a current student, you will have access to more tools and services now, than both before being admitted and after graduating.

What accounts do I have access to?

  • Banner Self-Service - You will not use your Banner Self-Service account nearly as much as before and after graduation. While you are a student attending courses, this account username and password is overwritten by your ONID account.
  • ONID Account - This is your login information for almost everything Oregon State related. Make sure to keep this information memorized, and NEVER give your password to anyone.

What mailboxes do I have access to?

  • ONID Email - This is your Gmail mailbox that Oregon State University provides while you are a current student. Most professors prefer all emails come from this address. Once you graduate, this mailbox will have a grace period before you will be locked out.
  • Lifetime Email - The lifetime email is more useful after graduation, but you have access to it now. It has no mailbox space, so it basically is a forwarding address that will send to your personal email, with your @oregonstate.edu email as a front.
  • Listserve - Listserves are also another email forwarding system. If you are going to be managing large groups of people through email, you can create a listserve email to make managing contacts easier.

What are a couple useful things to know?

  • How to Access Software Availible - While you are a student, you have access to a ton of software that Oregon State University has to offer. Most of the software requires signing in with your ONID account.
  • How to Reset ONID Password - This is a very useful process to know. It is best to know this process before getting locked out of your account, just so the process isn't completely new.
  • What Happens to ONID Once You've Graduated - This information is more useful later in your College career so that you can prepare yourself for post-graduation changes.

What are the main things I have access to?

  • Your ONID Account - Again, this is everything.
  • Your Gmail Mailbox - Make sure to send all of your school related emails through Gmail to ensure nothing gets blocked by spam filters!
  • MyOSU - This is the main host site where all of the Oregon State tools and services are located. This covers everything from - where your OSU ID is located, to how to make tuition payments to OSU.
  • Citrix Remote Applications - Remote applications that can be used while on or off campus.
  • Service Desk Technical Support - We are here to help you with technology, so that you can focus on your school work as a student. We also manage all of these documents you are reading. Give us a call if you need help or want to provide feedback!

Current employees are anyone who is currently working at Oregon State University in a full time position. Some part time workers, student workers, or affiliates may get some of these same tools depending on what department they are in. It is recommended to talk to either your departments support team or your supervisor if you have any questions for what tools you specifically have available to you.

What accounts do I have access to?

  • Banner Self-Service - Most of the tools you need will be located in MyOSU. This account is more for people who are no longer at Oregon State University.
  • ONID Account - This account is where all of your permissions are. Nine times out of ten, when something asks for a username and password, it is this account.

What mailboxes do I have access to?

  • ONID Mailbox - As an employee, we recommend forwarding this mailbox to your Exchange mailbox. Main reason is because it is not generally used by employees since it is not a first.last@oregonstate.edu email address.
  • Exchange Mailbox - This is the main email mailbox you will use while working at Oregon Stte University. This account is managed by your support team.

What are a couple useful things to know?

  • How to Find Your Support Team - Support teams are based on what department you are in.
  • The difference between an Exchange mailbox and ONID account - The main thing is that your Exchange mailbox is not an account. What that means is your email account cannot be logged into for extra permissions, unlike your ONID account.

What are the main resources I have available?

  • Your ONID Account - Again, this is your primary account here at Oregon State University.
  • Your Gmail Mailbox - Not used very often, but it does exist. Currently all new accounts are set up with Gmail inboxes by default.
  • Your Exchange Mailbox - Your Primary email address, usually in the format first.last@oregonstate.edu.
  • MyOSU - Main site at Oregon State that has most of your daily tools, as well as links to tax forms, payroll information, etc.
  • Most Software Through Oregon State - Almost all of our software can be requested through our software coordinator. This is the site where requests must go through
  • Service Desk Technical Support - The Service Desk can help you with all of your small or large technical issues on your personal devices. We also have a walk up desk to bring those devices to.
  • Department Specific Helpdesk - Your departments Helpdesk is who you will want to get into contact if your computer has any technical issues, or if you have any technical questions.

This section is specifically for Alumni and previous employees. Once you are no longer affiliated with Oregon State University, you lose access to a lot of resources, but you still have the fundamentals. Most of what you have access to is for official documentation. Emeritus employees will have access to more utilities than what is below, based on what their department has given them.

What accounts do I have access to?

  • Banner Self-Service - This is the only account that most previous employees will have access to. In this account is both transcripts, W2s, and any other official documents you need from Oregon State University, after leaving.

What mailboxes do I have access to?

  • Lifetime Email - This is only available to Alumni who have graduated from Oregon State University. Basically acts as an email forward since the "mailinbox" has a space of 0Mb. The lifetime email is whatever you want as a username, followed by @lifetime.oregonstate.edu.

What are a couple useful things to know?

  • How to Access Transcripts - As an Alumni, you will need to know how to access your transcripts. Generall they will be used more right out of college until you get enough work experience.
  • How to Access W2 Information - Pay information is pretty useful to know how to get once tax season comes around!

What are the main resources I have?

  • Banner Self-Service - The primary account you will have for any official documents.
  • Lifetime Email - Basically an email forwarder, ends in @lifetime.oregonstate.edu.
