About NSCS
Foundations of the NSCS
NSCS began in 1994 at George Washington University in Washington DC and is now a part of over 200 campuses nationwide. It is a not-for-profit organization and its goal is to encompass the three values of scholarship, service, and leadership.
Scholorship
Scholarship is NSCS's core value and it seeks to recognize students' acheivements. As an honor society, all members are chosen on the basis of their academic record and are expected to continue to strive for academic success.
Service
NSCS believes that the most important thing that one can do is be involved with the community and make a positive impact on another life. NSCS chapters organize many service projects a year, includeing their involvment with local middle school students in the Planning for College Success Program. Members are encouraged to not only participate in the chapters community service projects, but to also be active in planning them.
Leadership
The ability to lead others is. Members are given many opportunities to be leaders in their chapter, including being an officer or organizing service projects.
Membership
Membership into NSCS is by invitation only. The criteria for invitation is 45-89 completed OSU credits and a gpa of 3.4. This usually means students invited are finishing their freshman or sophomore years. But since the credit totals are based on OSU credits only, junior or senior transfer students may also be invited. Invitations are sent spring term.
Although students are invited in their first and second years, they are members for life. Once a member, students not only have the opportunity of participation in a local and national organization, but countless benifits in the form of scholarships for school or study abroad programs, leadership and service experience for graduate school applications or resumes, and career and intership connections.
