General

  • EH&S and the Corvallis Fire Department perform safety and fire inspections throughout OSU
  • A few unsafe conditions routinely show up on these inspections.
  • The Ten Most Unwanted conditions are listed below
  • All these items are easy to spot and correct - check your work areas and remove them

The Ten Most Unwanted Conditions

  • Hallways and stairwells obstructed by stored material; refrigerators, chairs, table, etc
  • A clear pathway is not maintained to fire extinguishers, emergency eyewash fountains, safety shower, switch panels and safety switches
  • Compressed gas cylinders are unsecured
  • Storage of chemicals and equipment in fume hoods that are also being used for chemical operations
  • Storage of more than ten gallons of flammable liquids in glass containers per room and not in approved flammable liquid storage cabinets
  • Machinery such as drill presses and pedestal grinders not secured to the floor
  • Fire doors propped open
  • Electrical power cords laying across walkways, creating a tripping hazard
  • Electrical power cords with deteriorated insulation
  • Extension cords used for permanent electrical wiring
