Counseling MS and PhD


Overview

The master's and doctoral programs with a major in counseling are designed to fit the needs of the working professional. These programs can be completed while a person continues to work fulltime. The weekly and weekend classes are interactive and experiential. The faculty brings to the learning process a wide range of theoretical orientations and lived experiences. The goal of these programs is to develop counselors who are leaders in social justice and diversity.

Master of Science Degree with a Major in Counseling

The master’s degree program with a major in counseling is 75 quarter hours and completed on a part-time basis. Students take two classes per quarter for 12 consecutive quarters. Most of these courses are offered in the late afternoon and early evening once a week for the ten weeks of the quarter on the Corvallis campus. Occasionally, a course may be take place on a weekend or via the web.

Areas of Concentration within the Master of Science Degree with a Major in Counseling

At the master’s level, the counseling major has two areas of concentration. These areas are Community Counseling (preparing one for Oregon Professional Counselor licensure) and School Counseling (preparing one for TSPC school counselor licensure). With faculty approval, students may elect to complete both concentrations (see double concentration section below). Both concentrations possess the prestigious Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accreditation.

Extra School Counseling Licensure Requirements

For students taking the desiring Oregon school counseling licensure, TCE 216 (Purpose, Structure, and Function of Education) and TCE 309 (Field Practicum) must be completed in addition to the MS degree requirements before the faculty can give their recommendation to TSPC for Oregon school counseling licensure. These classes may be completed before, during, or after the counseling degree.

School Counseling and Community Counseling Double Concentration

It is common for students in the MS with a Major in Counseling degree program to complete the requirements for both the school counseling concentration and the community counseling concentration. Students who wish to complete both concentrations may do so with faculty permission.

Post Master’s Licensure

At the present time, OSU does not offer post master’s licensure only programs in school counseling or community counseling (i.e., LPC).

PhD with a Major in Counseling

This program is 150 quarter hours. 56 credits of the 150 can be transferred in from a counseling master’s degree. Students complete the program on a part-time basis. Specifically, students take two classes per quarter for 8 consecutive quarters and then complete a year of internship and dissertation work. Most of these courses take on weekends (e.g., Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm) and will be based in the Portland metropolitan area. Occasionally, a course may be take place via the web. With the exception of TCE 603 Dissertation, all courses will be offered solely through OSU’s Extended Campus. This curriculum was designed according to the CACREP standards for PhD programs.
