Bylaws and Nominations Committee
2001-2002 Annual Report of the Faculty Senate Bylaws and Nominations Committee

Prepared by Gordon Matzke

  1. Committee Membership.

The members of the Bylaws and Nominations Committee for 2001-2002 were as follows:

    Gordon Matzke, Chair '02 Geosciences
    Jim Males '02 Animal Sciences
    Jan Mosley '03 Civil Engineering
    Laurel Kristick '04 Valley Library
Executive Committee Liaison - Paul Doescher

  2. Senate Elections.

The Committee contacted many potential candidates in search of nominees for election to Senate offices. In the case of the Faculty Senate President-elect, twelve individuals were approached about their interest in being nominated before securing agreement from two people to stand for election. The reluctance of faculty to accept nomination frustrated our attempt to present a gender balanced slate of candidates for all offices. Ultimately, the Committee presented a slate of nominees for the positions of President-Elect and Interinstitutional Faculty Senate Senator. The nominees were:

    Faculty Senate President-Elect
    1. Roy Rathja, Associate Professor, College of Engineering
    2. Bruce Sorte, Professional Faculty, College of Agricultural Sciences

    Faculty Senate Executive Committee
    1. Kevin Ahern, Senior Instructor, Biochemistry & Biophysics
    2. Dianne Erickson, Associate Professor, Science and Mathematics Education
    3. Angelo Gomez, Professional Faculty, Affirmative Action & Equal Opportunity
    4. Jan Mosley, Professional Faculty, Civil, Construction, and Env. Engineering
    5. Janet Nishihara, Assistant Professor, Educational Opportunities Program
    6. Loretta Rielly, Associate Professor, The Valley Library
    7. Robert Smythe, Professor, Statistics

    Interinstitutional Faculty Senate
    1. Dan Edge, Professor, Fisheries and Wildlife
    2. Wayne Huber, Professor, Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

  3. Bylaws Revisions.

    1. The Committee asked Ken Williamson, Bylaws and Nominations Committee Past Chair, to make a presentation at the October, 2001 Senate Meeting. In his presentation he discussed a proposed Faculty Senate Bylaws revisions to add the senior IFS Senator to the Executive Committee. These revisions were presented for a vote at the November Senate meeting.

    2. The Committee brought two proposals for Bylaws revision to the June, 2002, Senate Meeting. One designated the new School of Education as an apportionment unit and the second specified that persons elected to IFS positions shall retain their Faculty Senate seats for the remainder of their Senate terms.

  4. The Future.

    1. The Committee had no unfinished business at the end of its term.

    2. Next year's committee should be alert to apportionment consequences of university reorganization resulting from the OSU 2007 process.

    3. The difficulty of securing candidates for the President-elect position suggests the Committee should start recruiting very soon after the start of the academic year to guarantee a full slate of qualified nominees.
