OSU Professional Faculty Excellence Award

The OSU Professional Faculty Excellence Award recognizes exceptional service to the university community by faculty who serve in non-academic units or whose service in an academic unit is not defined within the traditional academic categories of teaching, research, or extension. A $1,000 cash award and plaque will be provided.

Eligibility is extended to individuals with professional faculty rank as well as those with academic rank who serve in non-teaching roles (e.g., office managers, Facilities Services managers, fund-raisers, academic advisors, technical support faculty, coaches and athletic administrators, counselors, doctors and health care administrators, librarians, etc.). While such faculty may distinguish themselves in the traditional categories for a portion of their work, the bulk of their work must be in one of the many other areas vital to the functioning of the university. Nominations may be submitted by any faculty, staff, or student member of the university community.

Award Criteria

The Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee will consider the following evaluation criteria:

  • exceptional job performance
  • direct and significant involvement with and impact upon students, faculty, staff, or other university clientele
  • innovation or creativity in work
  • recognition by peers and colleagues of the quality of the nominee's work and service
  • professional achievement or activities
  • participation in university and community affairs
  • evidence of continued professional growth

Nomination Process

Nominations shall include: (1) the completed nomination form; (2) nominee's vita; (3) position description indicating breakdown of FTE allocation; and (4) three letters of support: one shall be from current or emeritus faculty; one shall be from a current or former student; and the third may be from a student, alumni, or others who can comment on the nominee's qualifications. Because the nominator completes the nomination form, the nominator is not eligible to submit a letter of support. The letters of support each shall not exceed three single-sided pages using at least 12 font and 1" margins. Please be certain that the nomination materials, particularly the three letters, address the criteria. Signatures on the letters and supporting documents must be included.

The original copy of the nomination form must be submitted to the Faculty Senate Office upon submission of the electronic copy; paper clip the original only – do not staple nor place it in a folder or binder. The nomination packet for the successful recipient becomes the property of University Archives and will not be returned to the nominator.

Selection Process

Nominations will be reviewed and selected by the Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee. Committee recommendations will be made on the basis of the information submitted; the committee does not solicit additional information.
