The OSU Plant ID Team is a voluntary extracurricular activity supported by the OSU Department of Rangeland Ecology and Management and the OSU Range Club. The plant team's chief goal is to enable students to quickly and efficiently identify 200 commonly occurring North American Wildland Plants. This skill is valuable to students in all natural science fields including: botany, environmental studies, fisheries and wildlife, crop and soil science, ecology, biology, zoology, range, natural resources, forestry, and any field where identification of common North American range plants may be needed. Plant team members are encouraged to participate in the Society for Range Management (SRM) Plant ID Test, which occurs at the annual (January) meeting of the SRM. The 2008 meeting is being held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Participating in the Plant ID Test is an attractive skill to be added to any resume and greatly increases employer interest within the Range and Natural Sciences Profession. Secondly, participants who score well at the test are given awards and receive recognition at an awards ceremony. Lastly, participants get to test their plant id skills against a number of colleges and universities.
