This chart shows percent pearlwort control 90 days after potting, using various preemergence herbicides. Percent control was determined by measuring the % of the container surface which was not covered by pearlwort. The bar labeled 'Control' represents containers not treated with any herbicide, and thus serves as control or comparison to herbicide treatments.
There are few control recommendations for pearlwort. Current OSU research shows that selecting coarse substrates inhibits pearlwort establishment and subsequent growth. In coarse substrates, seed are so small that they are likely to be flushed too deep below the container surface to germinate and establish. Most nurseries use substrates that are too fine, and in addition to causing a host of other problems, fine substrates promote pearlwort germination and establishment.
In this research, Snapshot, Rout, Broadstar, and OH2 provided excellent control (>85%).
