Natchez Mockorange                   fil-a-DEL-fus X ver-jin-A-lis

• Broadlead deciduous shrub, fast growting, 6-8(10) ft [1.8-2.4(3) m] tall, similar width.  Flowers white, about 5 cm wide, fragrant; blooms heavily.
• Like all Philadelphus, easy to grow, vigorous, little or no care.
• Hardy to USDA Zone 4   ‘Natchez’ was named by Alfred Rehder of the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University.  It is a hybrid of two parents, each of which in turn are hybrids.  One parent, P. lemoinei, is as hybrid of P. microphyllus, a native of the southwestern US, and P. coronarius, native to Europe and Asia.  The other parent of P. x virginalis is P. nivalis plenus named and possibly developed by Austrian Nicholas Jacquin, 1727-1817. This plant is also a hybrid of P. pubescens of North America and P. coronarius.
