English or Persian Walnut               JU-glanz RE-gee-a

• Broadleaf deciduous tree, 40-60 ft (12-18 m), rounded to open, spreading; grayish bark.  Pith of stem uniformly chambered.  Leaves alternate, pinnately compound, odd number of leaflets, usually 5, 7, or 9, each leaflet 5-15 cm long, terminal generally largest, progressively smaller toward petiole base.   Fruit (nut) 4-5 cm diam., walnut of commerce.  Terminal buds 2-3 times larger than lateral buds.
• Sun. Prefers a deep, dry, light loamy soil, does not do well in wet or poor soils.
• Hardy to USDA Zone 5(6)     Native from southern Europe to the Himalayas and China.  There a large number of selections (cultivars) of Juglans regia that are grown commercially throughout the world.  Some cultivars can be grown in Oregon, including: 'Franquette', 'Chandler, 'Carpathian' and 'Hartley'.  In the US, about 99% of all the commercial walnuts are produced in California.
