Herbaceous perennials, 18-20 species and numerous hybrids. Most have divided foliage and nodding white, rose, green, or purple flowers which appear in winter or spring. The more common species include H. argutifolius, Corsican Hellebore, H. foetidus, Bearsfoot Hellebore, H. niger, Christmas Rose, and H. orientalis, Lenten Rose.
