False Daphne, Yuzuri-Ha Tree                   daf-nee-FIL-lum ma-KRO-po-dum

• Evergreen shrub or small tree, to 20 ft (6 m) tall and similar width, dense, rournded.  Leaves (rhododendron-like), simple, alternate, sometimes appear whorled at ends of branches, narrowly oval to oblong, to 7.5-20 cm long, leathery, dark green above, glaucous and slivery below; mid-vein and petiole may be tinged red.  Flowers small, petalless, in axillary clusters (racemes), dioacious - male and female plants; male flowers deep purple-pink, female flowers green.  Bloom in late spring and early summer.  Fruit spherical, blue-black, about 1 cm wide.
• Sun to partial shade, in moist, well-drained soil.  Benefits from winter protection
• Hardy to USDA Zone 7         Native to China, Korea and Japan.
