• Deciduous shrub, to 7 ft (2 m) tall and wide wide, upright.  Leaves alternate, simple, broad-ovate to oval, 2-5 cm long, tip acute or obtuse often with a short, abrupt point (mucronate), base rounded, margin entire, upper surface green and smooth, lower surface grayish to white, hairy (tomentose); petiole, 2-4 mm long.  Flowers pinkish, 2-4 per nodding cluster, petals slightly spreading.  Fruit small, about 6 mm across, sphere-like, red, containing 2 nutlets.
• Sun to part shade.  Susceptible to fire-blight.  Recommended for farmstead and field windbreaks for Prairie Provinces and northern Plains States.
• Hardy to USDA Zone 3 (depends upon selection, e.g., 'Centennial' is winter hardy in North Dakota)      Native to Europe, including Britain, and northern Asia.
