Acer rubrum Autumn Spire Aceraceae
Autumn Spire Red Maple
- Broadleaf deciduous tree, to about 50 ft tall and 30 ft wide (15 × 9 m), has ascending branches and
a broad-columnar crown. Leaves are 3-lobed with truncate to cordate (heart-shaped) bases, margins are
serrated; shows early fall color which progresses from deep-purple red to bright red. Only male flowers
are observed in spring, hence no seeds are formed (i.e., seedless).
- Hardy to USDA Zone 3 Seeds were collected from a red maple tree in Grand Rapids, Minnesota
and the resulting seedling population grown for some 20 years at the University of Minnesota Arboretum near
the Twin Cities. 'Autumn Spire' was selected from the population by Dr. Harold Pellet and patented in 1992 (PP 7,803).
