In our last issue of Open Minds, we reported on a new endowment fund that had been created to honor Irma Delson, who dedicated her many years at OSU to serving students from all over the world. The Bridge to the Future Fund helps students in the final phase of their graduate education to pay research expenses, publication costs, and other incidentals that stand in the way of completing their studies.
In these first few months, the Bridge to the Future Fund has already grown to over $19,000 and we expect to make the first award in the coming academic year. That total reflects 43 donations, the largest being a gift of $1,000. The fund is an apt tribute to Irma, whose small but frequent acts of kindness helped many students overcome their obstacles. It fills a gap that is often neglected, when a small financial boost can make all the difference to realizing a student’s promise.
Contributions to the Bridge to the Future Fund can be made through the OSU Foundation website at http://osufoundation.org/giving/index.html. Flexible funds like this one, as well as more targeted grants and fellowships, are critical to attracting and keeping the kind of graduate students who will become tomorrow’s leaders in every field.
