Oregon State University

For Parents

Discovering the Scientist Within is a free half-day workshop held at the Oregon State University for around 100 middle school aged (6-8th grade) girls from Oregon. As part of a small group, each girl attends two science activity exploration activities as well as an opening session.

Middle school-aged girls come to Discovering the Scientist Within workshop to learn about the wide range of career options for women in science, technology, engineering and math. Through hands-on activities, they find out what it's like to work in different careers. Student participants have a chance to interact with professional women who work in a variety of fields. And they have a chance to meet other girls who share their interests.

In the online registration, girls will indicate their top science interest areas and we will place them in workshop groups prior to the event. You will receive a day-of program and activity details via email prior the event. Please keep in mind that this day is all about exploration and that STEM is often interdisciplinary. Your daughter will learn a lot and have fun regardless of the workshop group she is assigned.

The science exploration activities are designed for girls only. Parents are given the option of signing up for our parent sessions while their girls are exploring. Spaces in these sessions are limited, however, and will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Parents will be given the option to sign up while they are registering their middle schooler.
