OSU Banner Password Change Rules


(effective April 17, 2006)

You will not be required to change your password until your next regularly scheduled password expiration.

*If you are needing to change your Data Warehouse password, you must FIRST change your Banner password using the OSU Banner Password Change Process below.

Passwords must:

  • be a minimum of 7 characters and no more than 30
  • contain a minimum of 1 alphabetic character
  • contain a minimum of 2 non-alphabetic characters
  • different from old password by at least 3 characters
  • only contain these characters: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789!#$%()*+,-/:;<=>?_

Passwords may not

  • contain any part of the username forwards or backwards
  • contain 3 consecutive identical characters
  • be part of any common dictionary words (with non-alphabetic characters removed)
  • contain these characters: ~ ` @ ' . ^ & { } [ ] | \ "

NOTE:

  • You can only successfully change your password once every 24 hours.
  • Your password will be LOCKed after 365 days of no logons
  • 10 consecutive failed attempts to log in will lock your account for 1 hour. After that hour, you can try to log in again.
  • There is no limit to the number of times you can try to choose a new password that will satisfy the new rules.
  • If you also have a Data Warehouse account, first change your Banner password. Next wait about 5 minutes for the accounts to synchronize passwords. Then use your Banner username and password to access the Data Warehouse.

After your password expires, you will see the message "The password has expired." when you log into Banner. Then it will take you to a dialog box where you can change your password. This dialog box does not remind you of all the password rules. If you are not ready to change your password, there is a 14 day grace period where you can cancel out of the dialog box without changing your password and still get into Banner. After the 14 days have passed, you must change your password before you can get into Banner.

You will be required to change your password every 100 days. After 100 days, the next time you log on, you will be warned that you have 14 days to change your password, but you can still log in without changing your password if you cancel out of the dialog box. After that time you won't be able to log in until your password is changed. The 14 days don't start until after your first attempt to login after the 100 days. So if you are out for 9 months, your 14 day grace period begins the next time you log in.

You have to log in to Banner at least once every 365 days to keep your account active. If you mostly use Self-Service, you should log in through banner.oregonstate.edu once every 365 days. If you have a data warehouse account, you also need to log into it at least once every 365 days to keep that account active.

Do not share your password with anyone. Do not leave your password in a visible or obvious location. Make it hard to guess but easy to remember.

OSU Banner Password Change Process

To use the Banner form GUAPSWD to change your password, click the Change Banner Password link on the right side of the main Banner menu screen, or type "GUAPSWD" directly into the "Go To" box at the top of the main menu.
This form will remind you of the password rules.

Any time you don't remember your password, or your account is expired or locked, we recommend you: Go to OSU Online Services http://infosu.oregonstate.edu/login and log in with your OSU ID and GAP

  • Choose Personal Information
  • Choose Change Banner Forms/DW Password
  • Enter your Banner Username and your new Banner password twice and click OK
  • Watch for a message saying that your password change was successful. You will also receive an email confirming that you successfully changed it.
  • If you also have a Data Warehouse account, wait about 5 minutes for your accounts to synchronize passwords.
