General University Policies Manual
Effective: 05/13/1997
It is the policy of Oregon State University to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and other applicable federal and state regulations that prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability.
The Rehabilitation Act and the ADA require that no qualified person shall, solely by reason of disability, be denied access to, participation in, or the benefits of, any program or activity operated by the University. Each qualified person shall receive the reasonable accommodations needed to ensure equal access to employment, educational opportunities, programs, and activities in the most integrated setting.
Oregon State University (OSU) is required to ensure that all programs and activities at OSU are accessible to individuals with disabilities. The Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) program has responsibility to provide access to all regular academic programs and essential student services. SSD does not cover the cost of services for programs or activities such as non-credit courses or activities open to the public. The department/college program, or agency sponsoring such events, is responsible for providing access and funding all associated costs. Should the unit be unable to pay the costs, a request for funds should be directed to the Affirmative Action Office for review and final referral to the appropriate administrative office.
Regular Academic Program - Any course offered by OSU and taken for OSU credit is covered by the SSD program for eligible students. Access for activities outside of class identified as a course requirement and required of all students is funded by the SSD program.
Essential Student Services - SSD provides services for all programs identified as essential student services: Student Health Services, Counseling Center, departmental academic advising, Educational Opportunities Program, and Career Services, Center for Writing and Learning, Math Learning Center, Admissions and Orientation.
Programs and departments sponsoring public events/lectures, seminars (not taken for credit), symposia, etc.. are responsible for providing access. Access to programs and activities offered through Continuing Higher Education, English Language Institute and the Extension Service will be provided consistent with ADA requirements. Funding for associated needs will be the responsibility of the sponsoring unit. Departments must ensure that the room location is accessible, devices for individuals with hearing and visual impairments are available upon request and information on how individuals can request these and other accommodations is available on all promotional and advertising materials.
