(Rhamnaceae) was conducted using scanning electron microsopy of seed and leaf surfaces, flavonoid data, and phenetic and cladistic analyses of the morphological data. Seven species ar e recognized (Cenothus americanus L., C. herbaceus Hooker & Arnott, C. martinii M. E. Jones, C. microphyllus Michaux, c. parvifolius (Watson) Trel. and C. sanguineus Pursh) and placed into the new Series Ceanothus in Section Ceanothus. Two other Series (V elutinus N. Coile and Leucodermis N. Coile) are established.
