Catalog Description

An examination of various hazards associated with agriculture.  Control strategies will be explored and prevention methods identified.  Hazards examined include machinery, livestock, controlled spaces, pesticides, and other items common to the agricultural workplace.

General Description

This course is designed for students who plan to become agricultural education instructors and/or county extension agents.  The general focus of the course will be to prepare these individuals to properly teach safety to youth involved in agriculture.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Understand, identify, and minimize safety hazards involving agricultural machinery operation.
  2. Understand, identify, and minimize safety hazards involving agricultural chemicals.
  3. Understand, identify, and minimize safety hazards involving livestock.
  4. Understand the relationship between maintenance of equipment or facilities and the reduction of risk.
  5. Develop instructional plans and materials for teaching agricultural safety to youth.
  6. Understand appropriate methods for teaching agricultural safety to youth.
  7. Operate agricultural equipment safely through a series of driving courses.
  8. Develop a safety implementation plan for those who will teach either formally or informally.

Method of Instruction
In this course, students are responsible for much of the direction of the discussion.  Cooperative learning groups will be used throughout the course and students will teach the safety units to each other.

Students with Disabilities
Students with documented disabilities who may need accommodations, who have any emergency medical information the instructor should know, or who need special arrangements in the event of evaluation, should make an appointment with the instructor as early as possible, no later than the first week of the term.  In order to arrange alternative testing the student should make the request at least one week in advance of the test.  Students seeking accommodations should be registered with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
