Stratiolaelaps miles for biological control of root weevils
We have been investigating the ability of applications of the predatory mite, Stratiolaelaps miles, to suppress neonate root weevil larvae, a key pest, in liner stages of nursery production. We conducted similar parallel replicated Petri trials in cooperation with Dr. Jana Lee and Dave Edwards at USDA in 2011.
The data was promising with predation by 0; 1 mite or 3 mites against larvae showing the desired effect. Liner trials on pansies have been staged but were hampered by low viability of root weevil eggs produced in the USDA lab but we hope to be able to complete the liner trials in the future.
