Socio-economic Impact of Aquaculture Support Programmes on the Communities in the Lake Victoria Basin of Kenya

By MATHIAS W WAFULA

ABSTRACT

The paper summarizes the findings of a recent study carried out to assess the socio-economic impact of aquaculture activities in the Lake Victoria basin. For the last fifteen (15) years the aquacultural sub-sector has received substancial support both from Government and donors.

Initial emphasis was on the development of small scale fish culture by rural farmers with extension support from the programmes.

The study examined the extent to which fish farming had been adapted as an economic activity and whether any form of sustainability had been established by some communities after the fifteen years of intensive support.

The study revealed lack of adequate information on socio-economics, marketing, nutrition, credit facilities and cost benefit analysis on aquaculture enterprises to determine whether aquaculture interventions have contributed significantly to the overall economic development of the beneficiaries. The paper discusses the need to address issues related to collection of baseline data as a basis for future impact assessment studies. Socio-economic surveys and participatory rural appraisal (PRA) studies.
