Weather Data Explanation

This is an outline of the data contained in the files for each ARS weather station. Each site file contains 8 sheets or windows, (some including charts/graphs). The tab names (listed at the bottom of the browser window when viewing each file) describe each of the data files contained in the sheet.

Following is a descriptive listing:
  1. SumM: Selecting this window provides monthly averages, maximums, minimums, or totals for measured parameters in Metric units.
  2. SumE: Selecting this window provides monthly averages, maximums, minimums, or totals for measured parameters in English units.
  3. GDDM: Selecting this window provides a plot of Metric Growing Degree Data using Base Temp (0 degrees Celsius). The data used to calculate the daily accumulated Growing Degree information is provide below the graph in Metric Units.

If the spreadsheet is downloaded, the user can select the desired Base Temp for calculating the GDD totals (i.e. 0 degrees C is the value normally used in wheat development). The formula for calculating this value is also provided for reference. Additionally, the user can enter a zero (0) for the appropriate planting date to calculate GDD specific for a crop.
  4. GDDE: Selecting this window will provide the daily accumulated Growing Degree information in English Units. As in GDDM, the user can select the desired Base Temp for calculating the GDD totals.
  5. Precip: Selecting this window provides a plot of accumulated precipitation in millimeters and inches. This contains the daily precipitation totals in Metric (mm) and English units (in). Additionally, the accumulated total from September 1 is calculated.
  6. Daily Temps: Selecting this window provides a plot of daily average air, 1" soil, and 4" soil temperature in Metric and English Scale. The data field below the graph contains the daily average air temperature, 1" soil temperature, 4" soil temperature, average relative humidity, calculated daily evapotranspiration (ETo), and daily volumetric soil water content (%).
  7. Daily Wind: Selecting this window provides the daily average and maximum wind speed values and the daily average wind direction.
  8. AllData: Selecting this window provides a plot of daily wind speed (mph), relative humidity, calculated ETo (Inches/Day), and soil water content. The data below the graph includes all measured parameters in metric and English Units in a single sheet.

NOTES:

DPET - 1" and 4" soil temperature and 4" soil water content continuously measured under bare soil.

JEP - 1" and 4" soil temperature and 4", 8", 12", and 16" soil water content continuously measured under CRP grass.

PARS - 1" and 4" soil temperature and 4" soil water content continuously measured under cool season turf grass.

RDWS - 1" and 4" soil temperature and 4" soil water content continuously measured under stubble (chem. fallow).

RSPET - 1" and 4" soil temperature and 4" soil water content continuously measured under stubble (chem. fallow).

WILD – 1" and 4" soil temperature and 4" , 8", and 12" soil water content continuously measured under pasture grass.
