Ways to Help a Friend in Distress
Express your concern. Ask them directly if they are having thoughts about suicide. Asking the questions will not put the idea into someone’s head. Listen, offer support and understanding. Don’t worry about saying the wrong thing. Your genuine interest and support are what matters.
Let your friend know that help is available on campus and in the community.
If your friend is having suicidal thoughts, don’t promise to keep it a secret, even if they request this. You will likely need support and advice on what to do.
If your friend is imminently suicidal, don’t leave them alone. Assist them in getting support and professional help.
If you have concerns, feel free to consult with campus helpers. Talk with a professional to make sure you’ve done all you can to help your friend.
