Greek Achievement

Academic values in the Greek community

Modern fraternities began as literary societies. Phi Beta Kappa was the first Greek-letter fraternity, and its members created it in order to discuss their class lectures and political issues of the day. Today, although these "literary societies" are decidedly more social, academics remain the first order of business.

Fraternities and sororities play an important part in the academic success of their members. Fraternities and sororities can help make the academic transition from high school to college easier, as well as improve the scholarship of continuing students.

Many resources for the promotion of academic excellence are available at fraternities and sororities. The wide range of majors insures that someone will always be able to help members with their studies. Most chapters have internet access via computer network and printers, house computers available for members’ use, as well as fax machines, photocopiers, study files, tutor programs, and designated study areas and quiet hours.

The Greek community at OSU recognizes that academic achievement is the most important aspect of college life, and the academic goal of each chapter is to be above the All Men's or All Women's Average. Chapters continually support students in reaching their full academic potential.

Honorary Societies

There are two prominent Greek honorary societies; The Order of Omega and Gamma Sigma Alpha. Each society focuses on leadership and community service. More information can be found at their websites.
