Welcome to Week 5,

This is the last week to turn in your applications for the CCE and SLI. SLI and CCE are hiring and applications are due Friday May 3rd by 5pm. Also, the Human Services Resource Center is hosting a Community Bake sale in the Quad this Friday from 12-5pm. Stop by and purchase some yummy treats for you and mom. Next week is Pride Week and there are a ton of great events, check out the listing below. There is also going to be an auction next week for a Kaplan Test Prep course at a reduced price, perfect for students who are preparing for the LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, and more! Ten Rivers Food Web Benefit Dinner Volunteers

Description: Ten Rivers Food Web is seeking several one-time volunteers for a benefit dinner on Cinco de Mayo at LBCC in Albany. The dinner supports low-income access to local, healthy food in Albany. Experience with food service, decoration, or other event planning is helpful, but not required.  Volunteers will receive dinner and will have a great time!

Divine Nine Greek Week Toiletries Drive

Description: Currently we are collecting  travel size toiletry donations at 5 different locations on campus.

We will be collecting donations at these locations until May 21st, when we will have our toiletry sorting party (food and music). The event will take place at 5:30pm in the Native American Longhouse at OSU. We ask that those who volunteer to sort bring at least one travel sized toiletry donation with them. The items will be separated based on gender and age appropriateness, then bagged and given to Community Outreach, Inc.

Site Leaders Needed for Day of Caring!
The Center for Civic Engagement is in need of site leaders for our Day of Caring service projects to be held on the afternoon of Friday May 31st. The Day of Caring service projects are being planned in collaboration with United Way of Benton and Lincoln Counties and HandsOn Willamette.

The projects will run from 2-4:30pm but leaders will need to be available from 1pm-5pm that afternoon.

HSRC Community Bake Sale

Description: Help us kick off Mom's Weekend with a Community Bake Sale! We will be in the MU Quad from 12pm-5pm on Friday May 3rd.
Treat your mom to some delicious baked goods, including dairy and gluten free items!
All proceeds will benefit the OSU Emergency Food Pantry. Each item costs between $1-$2 -- we accept larger donations as well :) $1 provides 15lbs of food, that's 15lbs of food that will help someone who needs it.

Call for Submissions! Express Your Intersectionality

When: Thursday May 9th 7-9pm

Where: NAL

Description: Do you draw?  Perform spoken word? Poetry? Dance? Sing?  Cook? Play an instrument?  Is it how you express yourself and the intersections of your identity?  Then we want you to participate!  

 

“Crossroads Within: Performances at the Intersections of Identity” is a multimedia event celebrating intersectionality and how people each express their experiences as people with multiple identities. We are open to all forms of expression, from more conventional creative outlets like drawing and poetry to cooking and juggling.  Whatever way that you chose to express your identity is alright with us!

 

A declaration of your intention to perform along with your method of expression should be sent to sol@oregonstate.edu by the end of the day Friday, May 3rd.

 

 OTHER NOTES:  If your art or performance requires special set-up or accommodations, please contact sol@oregonstate.eduin advance of the due date.

DPO Kaplan Test Prep Auction

The women of Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc., will be partnering up with Kaplan to auction off one Kaplan Prep Test that may be used towards one of the following tests:

We realize that Kaplan Test Preps can be very costly so this is a way for us to provide a student, who cannot afford to pay at full price, a lower option.

HSRC is Hiring
The HSRC is a student-run, human services office focused on providing support and resources to students experiencing poverty, hunger, homelessness, and food insecurity. We are currently hiring for 5 student positions for the 2013-2014 school year.

Internal Coordinator (2 positions) – starting in June. Administrative oversight of direct services programs such as Mealbux, Health Insurance Subsidies, and Emergency Housing. 15hr/wk.

External Coordinator (1 position) – starting in September. Management of outreach and educational programming including tabling, events, trainings, and presentations. 15hr/wk.

Budget and Finance Coordinator (1 position) – starting in June. Management of daily finances, budget reporting, co-chairing student-led budget committee for the student fees process. 10hr/wk.

Media and Public Relations Coordinator (1 position) – starting in June OR September. Management of print, web, multi, and social media for outreach and education. Graphic design. 10hr/wk.

Internship and Volunteer Opportunities

Avery House Nature Center, a Nature education program of the Corvallis Environmental Center, is seeking students and community members that wish to gain experience in the following areas:

● Working with Local Youth, Ages 3 14

● Teaching Concepts focused on Local Ecosystems & Environmental Stewardship

● Using Place Based, Informal Education Techniques

● Facilitating Outdoor Activities to Engage Youth Physically and Mentally

● Assisting with Lesson Planning and Curriculum Development & Organization

● Learning about Non-Profit Management

● Marketing, Advertising, and Community Outreach & Event Planning

● Blogging & Social Networking

At Avery House Nature Center we believe in an interdisciplinary approach to connecting youth with Nature.

 

Our internships work well for students interested in or majoring in: Education (Including

Formal, Informal, Early, and Secondary), Forestry & Natural Resources, Fish and Wildlife,

Environmental Science, and Public Health. However any student, regardless of major, is

welcome to apply as long as it is approved by an advisor. Through our Summer Internships you

can earn 3 academic credits; a minimum of 100 hours is required to receive these credits.

Volunteer opportunities are also available for anyone interested in gaining experience in

the field through hands on experiences. All are welcome to apply, although those with experience

in the Natural Sciences and/or experience with youth is preferred. A minimum of 100 hours over

a period of six months is required of our volunteers. Please look at our Summer Camp offerings

to decide if there are any sessions you are particularly interested in, and which weeks/times you

will be available to volunteer. Our Nature Play Preschool class also needs volunteers, and that

class is held every Thursday during the summer.

 

General Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

○ Assist AHNC staff teaching during our Nature Education Summer Camps.

○ Explore and investigate nature outdoors – get dirty and have fun discovering Corvallis!

○ Assist in the research and development of new lesson plans to add to the current curriculum

for our education programs.

○ Assist in the research and development of additional sustainability/environmental

stewardship topics, activities, learning tools and games to be incorporated into current and

future curriculum.

○ Assist in running, developing and creating interactive displays for DaVinici Days and similar

community outreach events.

○ Write at least one well researched, original and journalistic article for our blog The Nature Play Way.

○ Assist in the care and handling of our Education Animals.

 

Preferred Qualifications

○ Knowledge of the Natural Sciences and local ecosystems – informal knowledge is acceptable

○ Ability to bike and follow bike safety rules

○ CPR and First/Aid Certified

○ Knowledge of local natural areas

○ Previous experience working with children
