Speaker: FRANK NORRIS, Historian, U.S. National Park Service, Anchorage, AK
Topic: "The Alaska Gold Rush - A Time of Scalawags, Heroes, and Fools"
Dr. Norris is the historian for the U.S. National Park Service in Anchorage, Alaska. He has been prowling through Western ghost towns since the 1960's and has been writing about the West for almost as long. He spent most of the 1980's in Skagway, Alaska, where he was a park ranger and part-time historian. He has written a dozen books and more than 20 articles on topics ranging from homesteading to tourism, gardening, sport fishing, the military, and Hollywood. The Alaska-Yukon gold rush period, however, remains a major interest. He, along with Parks Canada historian David Neufeld, recently completed Chilkoot Trail: Heritage Route to the Klonkike. His presentation will cover over 40 years of gold rush activity, from the 1870's until 1920.
Dr. Norris resides in Anchorage.
