Current interests Over the last decade, students, colleagues and I have contributed mathematical advances in basic and applied theory of ecological communities. These include variance of eigenvalues (Ecology), probabilistic evaluation of community matrix predictions (Ecology), redefinition of stability criteria (Am. Nat.), classification of community structure (Ecol. Model.), distribution pattern of indirect effects (ACM-SIGSAM), reconstruction of community structure (Fish. Res.), changes in life expectancy (Math. Biosc.), changes in risk of vector-borne disease (Trans. Roy. Soc. Trop. Med. Hyg.), Bayesian relational modeling of the epidemiology of West Nile virus (Risk Anal.) and the theory of vector-borne transient epidemics (J. Theor. Biol.). We have applied many of the above theoretical developments to field studies in fisheries, wildlife sciences and public health (Estuaries, Oikos, Can. J. Fish. Aq. Sc., Trans. Roy. Soc. Trop. Med. Hyg., Risk Analysis, Ecol. Mod., Fisheries Res.). We also have developed an interactive website that allows non-mathematically oriented students as well as advanced researchers to apply and learn these techniques (Loop Analysis link, above). Recently, in collaboration with a team of scientists from various national fisheries agencies and following a 2008 modeling workshop sponsored by IFREMER in Nantes, France, we applied qualitative modeling to predict responses of complex exploited systems to perturbations, integrating both ecological and economic components of the fisheries (Fish and Fisheries). I maintain an interest in global warming and was an invited participant to a UN sponsored executive roundtable on scenario building climate change futures, at the United Nations (UN building, New York, NY) and at the Swiss Re Center for Global Dialogue (Ruschlikon, Switzerland) in 2003-04. I am a researcher on the Oceans & Human Health Initiative with collaborators at the West Coast Center for Oceans and Human Health in Seattle, WA. Current or recent students are completing work on sensitivity analysis of the community matrix (Eco. Mod.) and on reactivity of vector-borne epidemics (J. Theor. Biol.), (Geoff Hosack, Ph.D., currently Ohio State U.), forensic entomology (David England, M.Sc., currently US Navy), mosquito vector dynamics in Corvallis (Jill Townzen, Ph.D., EPA Star grant; currently Mid. Tenn. St. Univ.) and salmon parasitism in the Klamath river (Adam Ray, current M.Sc.). With EPA leadership, I am participating in a State Dept. funded research project on the ecology of malaria in Uzbekistan. Previous Research Interests Before 2000, my research at OSU centered on entomological physiology, behavior and epidemiology. We identified the mode of action of mosquito repellency and devised the currently standard olfactometer (J. Med. Ent., Med. Vet. Ent.); -discovered novel mosquito salivary components and associated behavior (Comp. Biochem Phys., Parasit. Immun.); -proposed models of arbovirus monitoring (Epidemiology) and malaria (Parasit., Med. Vet. Ent.); -elucidated the etiology of honeybee mite parasitism (Phil. Tr. Roy Soc., Trends Parasit.) as well as aphid feeding behavior (J. Econ. Ent.); -obtained a patent in apiculture. Before my arrival at OSU, I was involved in discoveries of mosquito-parasite interactions (Science, PNAS, Am. J. Trop. Med. Hyg., Trends Parasit.), mosquito salivary function (Exp. Parasit., J. Exp. Biol., J. Ins. Physiol., Comp. Biochem. Phys.), endocrinology (J. Ins. Physiol.) and sensory reception (J. Morph.)
