This page lists old tests, notes, Maple worksheets, sample
problems, etc., for Mth 341.
You may find this material useful for studying.
Expect some overlaps in the various files.
Eventually very old files will dribble off the bottom.
Many of the documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF) or are
Maple worksheets (MWS).
PDF files are "Portable Document Files." You can use the
free Adobe Acrobat Reader, available at
http://www.adobe.com, to view or print PDF files. The
Acrobat Reader plug-in is installed in the browser(s) on many
campus computers. There are many other software packages for
reading PDF files. Maple Worksheets require Maple to be useful.

We present an example of a 3 by 3 matrix where Maple V5's row reduction yields rank 3,
but where we have reason to think the rank should be viewed as 2. Increasing the precision
of our calculations does not help - we simply get an apparently random sequence of 2's and
3's as we increase the precision in this ill-conditioned problem. This simple problem
illustrates that Maple for all its power does not negate the need for careful though and
thorough analysis of proposed solutions.

This worksheet is an introduction to using Maple in linear algebra (with the linalg
package). At this point only row reduction and the solution of systems of linear equations
are considered. More advanced topics will be considered later in the term. I have added a
few comments and examples to illustrate that while Maple is very powerful it is no
substitute for understanding. The worksheet is intended to be used in the Lab, but a text
and a PDF version are provided for perusal on any PC, even one without Maple.

The MLC lab contains 20 PC's running Windows NT. These workstations are equipped with
some popular mathematical software. This note has a few comments on using the lab, some
general comments on using Maple, and then a few examples pertaining to linear algebra
(with linalg package) . The ASCII file should be viewable in any browser. The PDF file
will, of course, require the Acrobat plug-in.
