Grade information by email

Homeland Security, older Federal family privacy laws, and OSU policy, all make it extremely inadvisable to send non-directory student information to Hotmail, Google, Yahoo, etc. Even ordinary directory information, or the assertion that you exist, is limited by Oregon anti-stalking laws. I don't pretend to be familiar with these laws, so I have adopted the following, possibly excessive, policy in connection with grade inquiries.

I will answer an email inquery about your grades, as time permits, if the inquiry is mailed from your personal ONID account or from a Mathematics account. The response will be sent only to your ONID account or to a Mathematics account, even if you include other return email addresses.

Requests for any information about any student (including existence, enrolment, etc.) from any person, other than the student, even from parents and spouses, will usually be ignored, or referred to the registrar's office. The proper destination for such requests is the registrar's office.

If a student sends me a request for grade information from an off-campus email address it will usually be ignored unless the question is so general that I can respond without confirming that the student is in my class.

Requests from on-campus non-ONID accounts may also be ignored if I can not easily verify them. In practice, I can verify only ONID accounts and Mathematics accounts easily.

Letters of recommendation for students to other schools or to prospective employers will be sent only if requested in person or from the student's ONID email account, or by a Mathematics student from the student's Mathematics email account, or by a former Mathematics student known to me.

Grade information may be released to other OSU faculty with a need-to-know, for example, in connection with awards, removal of "I" grades, etc.
