Promochlonyx Edwards, 1 sp
Promochlonyx includes one recognized species, P. australiensis (Ferguson). Except for the singled spurred tibia, adult P. australiensis are morphologically similar to Mochlonyx species and A. nitidus. In his review of the Australian chaoborids, Colless (1986) suggested that the single species currently recognized may represent two or more distinct species. He distinguished three forms, based on differences in adult coloration. The “type” and “northern” forms are indistinguishable from each other in the immature stages. Larvae of the “western” form differ from the other two forms in the number and complexity of the mandibular teeth. However, examination of additional representatives is necessary before formally distinguishing these forms. The pupae of the “type” form are not known and the immature stages of the “western” form were described from the material taken from the gut of a tortoise (Colless, 1986).
