Mochlonyx cinctipes

Mochlonyx cinctipes

Mochlonyx (Loew), 4 spp.

Mochlonyx adults are distinguished from the holoarctic chaoborid genera by a reduction in tarsal segment length and the lack of tibial spurs. Wing venation characters separate Mochlonyx adults from Australomochlonyx Freeman and Promochlonyx Edwards. Pupae are diagnosed based on the size and shape of the seventh abdominal segment. An elongate and completely sclerotised respiratory siphon distinguishes Mochlonyx larvae from other chaoborids. Although, Mochlonyx adults can be identified to species based on male and female genitalia characters, as larvae, three of the species are morphologically indistinct.
