Cryophila Edwards
Cryophila lapponica (Martini) is the sole representative of this genus and is restricted to temporary pools throughout Northern Europe and Western Siberia. Adults are distinguished from the other chaoborids by the presence of two tibial spurs and a reduction in the length of the tarsi. Pupae are similar to those of Mochlonyx but differ in their shape of the terminal paddles and coloration of the abdominal segments. Unlike the larvae of other chaoborids, which have at most one pair of abdominal tracheal air sacs, C. lapponica has two pairs of abdominal air sacs.
