It can be less harmful than other nutritional practices that athletes use to enhance performance, such as chronic caffeine use. There are some risks, though, associated with creatine use. Gastrointestinal problems are the most common side effect with users. Weight gain is also a common side effect. Additionally, the body can react to impurities and contaminants that may be present in some forms of creatine supplementation. Some of the contaminants are benign, but some can cause some problems. Some of these contaminants, by products and impurities can be detrimental to the body. Discretion is definitely required in order to ascertain the right supplement and to be able to handle any possible side effects. The negative side effects of creatine use are few, but are worth mentioning here. There is a misconception that is quite common that labels creatine as a steroid or something similar to a steroid that is abused and can kill you. This simply is not true. The truth is that the side effects are relatively mild with the most common being an increase in water weight. This can make you look and feel bloated and swollen, particularly in the abdominal area. Your muscles will tend to retain more water, causing them to be softer instead of rock-hard. They will still appear hard and impressive to the untrained eye, particularly just after a workout, but after a few hours of rest, your muscles may be a little softer. The other common side effect to creatine actually occurs when you stop using it. If you use creatine for a four month cycle, then stop, you may notice a sharp decline in energy levels.
