For those of you who may not know about TESL-L, it is
a listserv for English language teachers with a wealth of useful
information. It has several 'branches' -- these are sublists that you
can join if you are a TESL-L member. For our next activity, you'll
practice subscribing to TESL-L if you are not a member already. Do
that by sending a message to the machine:
listserv@cunyvm.cuny.edu
- In the body of your message, you'll use the
following syntax, but substitute your first name and your last
name:
- SUB TESL-L YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME
- For example, I subscribe as
- SUB TESL-L Deborah Healey
When you subscribe, you'll get a message telling you
about the many and various options for further activity, including
joining the branches. The branches are:
- TESLCA-L Technology, computers and TESL
- TESLFF-L "Fluency First" and whole language
online seminar
- TESLIE-L Intensive English Programs, teaching and
administration
- TESLIT-L Adult Education and Literacy
- TESLJB-L Jobs, employment, and working conditions
in TESL/TEFL
- TESLMW-L Materials Writers
- TESP-L English for Specific Purposes
- TESL-L generates a great deal of mail -- there
are a lot of people who are subscribers. If it's too overwhelming,
you have a couple of options, INDEX and DIGEST. The INDEX is a
listing of messages by name and subject; to get the messages you
want, you need to send another request to the listserv. The DIGEST
just send you all the daily messages as one -- big -- message. To
select either of these, send a message to
- listserv@cunyvm.cuny.edu
- and in the body of the message, say
- SET TESL-L INDEX
or
- SET TESL-L DIGEST
or, to go back to the original way,
- SET TESL-L MAIL
If you decide you just want to be get mail from a
branch and not from TESL-L, you can set TESL-L to NOMAIL. That way,
you're still a subscriber and can get information from the archive or
from a branch, but you won't be reading quite so many messages. The
command is:
- SET TESL-L NOMAIL
Once you're a TESL-L member, you can try some of the
database activities we'll be talking about next.
